Lung Related Diseases

The lungs are primary, complicated respiratory organ which functions by expanding and relaxing thousands of times every day by bringing in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. It is the vital organ for our respiration; hence it is important to care for our lungs. Lung diseases are one of the leading causes of death in the world as the lungs are susceptible to various infections and diseases.

PULMONARY REHABILITATION

Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is a “comprehensive intervention based on a thorough patient assessment followed by patient-tailored therapies that include, but are not limited to, exercise training, education, and behavior change, designed to improve the physical and psychological condition of people with chronic respiratory disease and to promote the long-term adherence to health-enhancing behaviors”

PR is tailored to the individual who has recently had an exacerbation, with the aim of optimizing their respiratory function and therefore their quality of life (QOL) and participation in their everyday lives. PR has been proven to significantly improve health related QOL and exercise capacity in individuals with Chronic Respiratory Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) compared to usual care. Studies suggest PR is useful in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD. Individuals with COPD who undergo PR are likely to have better utilisation of healthcare service for the next 12 months, although it is unclear whether these benefits last beyond this.

Smoking Cessation

Smoking cessation is associated with clear health benefits. Cigarette smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States and worldwide. Tobacco use increases the risk of many acute and chronic diseases, including cancers at many sites.

Medications, including nicotine replacement, varenicline, and bupropion, have demonstrated efficacy as smoking cessation aids. These and other pharmacologic options to help patients stop smoking are discussed here.

The likelihood of a successful quit attempt is increased if counseling is provided along with the medications. An overview of smoking cessation management and the benefit of adjuvant behavioral therapies for smoking cessation are discussed separately. (See "Overview of smoking cessation management in adults" and "Behavioral approaches to smoking cessation".)

Smoking cessation treatment in adolescents is discussed separately. (See "Management of smoking and vaping cessation in adolescents".)
